Fosters Bakery is a family owned and operated bakery, specializing in freshly baked cakes, pastries, birthday cakes and desserts. Founded in 1950, we are now in our third generation, with the fourth one already in training. Our emphasis has always been on producing a consistently high quality product, free of any additives or preservatives, at a reasonable price. Our products are sold at the larger Supermarkets around Barbados and at our bakery in Rockley New Road.

Mrs. Muriel Blades originally started our bakery in 1950. With a young son at medical school in England, she needed to supplement her income and started supplying a local supermarket with fresh cakes and other baked goods. Her daughter Mrs. Linda Foster soon joined her and the two of them quickly became known for a consistently high quality product. The baking was all done at home in a domestic oven, using regular kitchen mixers.

As the demand for their products increased a more “formal” bakery was added downstairs the family home. Linda’s two daughters joined her at various stages and in 1987 a larger bakery was built at the present location. Over the years the business has developed and as her daughters married and left the business her son Andrew joined her and took over the bakery in 1999. The largest expansion to the plant has just been completed with a major focus on quality, safety and high operating standards.

Gluten Free

We are not a dedicated gluten free facility; however we make every effort to eliminate the posibility of cross contamination with our gluten free items. All gluten free ingredients are stored in a designated store room and gluten free products are produced once a week after our regular production has been completed and our facility and equiptment have been cleaned.

No Nuts

We do not handle peanuts or products containing peanuts at any point in the bakery. We do use almond essence in some of our icings and glazes.

Hand Cleaning

As a common practice we do not wear plastic gloves. It is generally accepted in the industry that a proper hand cleaning policy is more effective than wearing gloves. The outside of the glove can become contaminated just as easily as our hands and persons tend to have a false sense of cleanliness when wearing gloves, and do not change them as often as they should. Our policy is to wash our hands thoroughly and often so that we achieve a level of cleanliness that surpasses using gloves. We do however wear them if the particular task warrants it, for example when using irritating cleaners. No jewelry or nail polish is allowed and hands free hand wash stations are always close.

Facility Cleaning

We follow a rigorous cleaning schedule that allows for a daily cleaning of the equipment at the end of the work shift. The entire bakery is cleaned and sanitized daily and a thorough detailed cleaning is carried out at the end of each week. The walls and floors in our production and finishing sections are coated with a special epoxy that is formulated for the food service industry and provides a smooth easy to clean finish. The walls are curved where they meet the floor to eliminate any corners and crevices where dirt may collect ensuring that the area is easier to clean and maintain. Even the doors in our facility are finished in a smooth flat way to make them easier to clean.
